Sladnor Park – a haven of nature at its most beautiful in Maidencombe, Torquay. For the past 16 years or so Sladnor Park has slumbered peacefully, undisturbed by human activity. The site is a powerful reminder what our environment can look like when humans retreat from the scene – and a warning of what is lost and what damage can be done when we return. The following photographs document the process of a natural environment taking over at Sladnor Park. They offer a unique opportunity to witness how human activity is ultimately temporary and vanity and grand plans can disappear beneath the moss. If you wish to see this stunning and important part of Torbay’s heritage preserved, then support the objections to the ‘Doomsday Developments’ that may be in the pipeline.
This original, rare picture of Sladnor Manor House documents the magnificent building that once stood on the site.
Twenty two years after the fire that gutted the Sladnor manor house, the sculpted terraces and manicured lawns have been swallowed up, and wildlife has thrived as the site has been returned to nature.
