Maidencombe 2014 Round-up! December 30th at the Orestone 7:30.
As the year draws to a close, we can look forward to 2015 and join together with our friends and neighbours for a relaxed evening of sharing: sharing stories, sharing ideas and sharing a few gifts.
Nothing beats standing next to a fire and drinking mulled wine on a cold winter’s day.
But we’re going to take this opportunity to combine a few other things;
Secret Santa with a twist:
Of course the first twist is that this is taking place after Christmas.
However, the concept is nonetheless important regardless of the time of year as it reiterates the important concept that “you cannot benefit twice from something” – in the sense that giving without personal benefit is the purest form of giving and charity. Indeed related to this, there are even tribes in the Amazon that do not have a word for ‘thank you’.
Usually Secret Santas specify a limit of £5 per gift. Personally, I feel it might be refreshing to take a breather from the frantic consumption associated with this time of the year and throw it open to some handmade gifts (for those with the inclination to do so). For example, some flowers, a cake or a little piece of art work or card. Naturally, if you don’t have the time then buying something is absolutely fine – or you could get an ‘objet trouvé’ and take the role of the artist who finds something remarkable rather than making it!!
So far nine people have registered an interest for the Secret Santa. So if you are keen to take part, then drop a line to Neal Taylor (Bryn, Brim Hill) or email: info@maidencombeunity.org
Last but not least:
I would also like to take this opportunity to bring some attention to Jim Campbell’s beautiful and practical new booklet about Maidencombe for all to enjoy and use.
I originally wanted to organise a “book launch” for him, however, in his eagerness to deflate any pomposity, he had second thoughts and convinced me not to organise the event. On my second thoughts, however, I feel it would in fact be a nice opportunity to give him a round of applause and ask him to say a few words about his work.
Incidentally, in keeping with the concept of “giving”, at the current prices that Jim is charging, the booklet will certainly be a “non-profit” exercise whether or not this was intended!
At any rate, we do hope to see you all and very much hope that everyone has a festive time in the meantime.
